DEAR DASH...FROM SMALL FRY TO SCIENTIST

Brianna Photo

Dear Dash,

I am almost done with second grade, and I think it is time to seriously think about my plans for the future. When I grow up I want to be a scientist and an inventor. What should I start doing to make sure I stay on the right track? After all, I am not getting any younger!

Sincerely,

Brianna (Grade 2)

Dear Brianna,

Way to go! It's great to see that you're dreaming big and planning now for college! Here are a few things to keep in mind as you work toward making your dreams a reality:

  • Keep working hard in school. What you're learning in elementary school is building the foundation for lifelong learning.
  • Get involved in extracurricular activities. Volunteering at your local animal shelter or at a children's science center will not only give you some great real-life experience, but it may also help you get admitted in the program of your choice.
  • Does your school have a young scientist's club? Join if it does, or talk to your science teacher about starting one! Being part of a group of people who have the same interests as you can grow your passion and help advance your knowledge.
  • Talk to your parents about starting a college savings account. Have your parents tell all your friends and family they can also give gifts by depositing directly into your 529 account. The money will come in handy when it's time to pay for college.

Brianna, youre off to a great start. Whatever you decide to do, the most important thing is to keep saving, keep dreaming big, and keep working toward your education goals!

Love from Alaska,

Dash
